What is Soap?
Soap is a salt formed by combining a fat with an alkali, in this case vegetable oils and lye. Together they make soap. Soap has been used for thousands of years as a cleaning agent, however historical soaps were notoriously fickle to make. Sometimes they were too harsh. Sometimes they were too greasy. Ask a grandma and you can hear stories of handmade soaps strong enough to strip paint!. But oh, how times have changed. Modern measuring equipment and appliances have taken what was once a capricious and tedious task and turned it into a method that can consistently produce gentle, soothing soap.
Why handmade soap?
Commercial soaps can be harsh on human skin. Often they contain detergents and foaming agents that can emulsify the natural oils on your skin too well leaving your skin with a dry, itchy feeling. They also have the natural glycerin ( a byproduct of the soap making process) removed which can leave your skin feeling dry. Handmade soaps retain all their natural glycerin and clean your skin leaving it soft and happy feeling. My true handmade soap does not contain detergents or other additives other than botanicals, essential oils and high quality fragrance oils and leaves your skin gently perfumed (if you so chose) and very happy.
My soaps have been formulated with the utmost care using high quality ingredients that support the communities that make them when ever possible. To this end I purchase shea butter and other ingredients from a women's collective in Togo. My aim is to make a soap that delights your senses, cleanses and pampers your skin and fulfills my desire to support women's work around the world.
